Stinky Gear?

Your lacrosse gloves and pads can turn pretty nasty after some rainy or hot, sweaty games. Here are a few tips to help with the smell, and most importantly the germs and bacteria.

#1 Prevention – Hang your gear to dry immediately when you get home. We have hooks in our garage that used to hold the step ladder, but are now covered in lax gear.

Wipe out the interior of your bag with Clorox wipes. Yes, that bag that holds all of your gear will harbor the bacteria even while you are cleaning the pads. Wipes also work well for your helmet interior.

Febreze or dryer sheets help with the smell on an occasional basis. Look for the Antibacterial Febeeze. Be careful about dousing the gloves with Febreze as the chemical has been known to loosen the glue that holds parts of the gloves together. These do not kill MRSA or other harmful bacteria.

Wash you gear. Veteran lacrosse mom Scotti Brown uses Hibiclens liquid soap. Soak your gear in warm water and cleanser and dry with a fan and air flow. Put paper towels loosely in the gloves or direct airflow inside to help. Do not put your gear in the washer or dryer!

Most important, don’t let that gear hibernate in a wet, dark bag over the weekend!

Coaches Profiles & Season Goals

Rick Thompson
Rick originates from Long Island, NY where he played 3 years of high school lacrosse and two years of club ball at college in upstate, Oswego, NY. Having played attack and middie, Rick is knowledgeable in stick handling skills, offensive & defensive strategy, and playmaking. He has previous coaching experience with youth soccer and as an assistant the past two years with the 7/8 Kirkland boys lacrosse team under the tutelage of Jim Anderson. Rick's goals for the 3/4 Black team are to:
• Teach the boys good fundamental skills
• Basic Offensive and Defensive positions and movement
• And to have FUN so the boys come back for more!

Mike Rogers
Mike grew up in Okemos, MI where he lettered in football, track and swimming, and played baseball and tennis in high school. While in college at the University of Michigan he played flag football, ultimate, basketball and rugby. Having never played lacrosse before, Mike will use his experience from playing and coaching other sports and transition those skills to lacrosse. Mike has coached football, baseball, soccer and his son’s flag football teams. Mike’s goals for the 3/4 Black team are to:
• Teach the importance of teamwork and fun
• Assist kids in transitioning skills learned in other sports to lacrosse
• Keep the kids excited and engaged while learning new skills

Peter Zalkind
Growing up back East just outside of Boston, Peter can remember owning a lacrosse stick since 4th grade. He focused on soccer, ice hockey, and baseball through high school, but played club lacrosse for many years. At Claremont McKenna College in southern CA, he played football as a wide receiver and kicker/punter. With two very active boys, Peter has coached soccer, baseball, flag football, basketball, and now lacrosse. Peter’s goals for the 3/4 Black team are to:
• Provide an environment for learning and growth
• Build confidence through repetition and success
• Make fun a priority

We are off to a great start for our first official season as Kirkland Youth Lacrosse! If your son is playing on the KYL 3/4 Black Team, then you've come to the right place for the latest information about our team, our season's game and practice schedule (to the right), and other important information for parents from the coaching staff. Please visit regularly to see the latest updates, game pictures and video clips, and special announcements. We are very glad to have your son on our team. We take our responsibility as coaches very seriously, and we will strive to make this a very safe, fun and enjoyable season for all!
